Illustrated Discussion
Interpretive Drawing
Intuitive Depiction
This site displays artworks and publications from the collaboration between artist and design writer Professor Julia Lockheart and sleep scientist Professor Mark Blagrove. Please click on the menu items at the top of the page for details.
In our 90-minute public performances a recent or important dream is discussed with Mark, and Julia creates an artwork that captures the dream. All artworks are drawn and painted onto pages taken, with publisher's permission, from Freud's book The Interpretation of Dreams. Afterwards the dream sharer uses the artwork to revisit, consider and share the dream with others. The artworks from our public events and performances are shown here and their relationship to surrealism is detailed in a 2024 paper in the International Journal of Surrealism here.
The exhibition Le temps d'un rêve / Within the space of a dream that we were part of at Musée des Confluences, Lyon, France, ended in August 2025. Our video of the exhibition is on our YouTube channel here.
Our research suggests that this dream-sharing process encourages insight, understanding and empathy. See here for an article in Psychology Today about our collaboration, and here for our 2019 article in Frontiers in Psychology, on dream-sharing and empathy. Our 2022 paper in the International Journal of Dream Research on the effects of dream-sharing on empathy, social evolution and human self-domestication is here, articles on this from 2024 are in The Psychologist and in Psyche magazine.
